During your child's first year at Abingdon, we will be ensuring they are….

- Helping at tidy-up time
- Taking turns and sharing
- Learning how to follow the school rules and understanding why we have those rules
- Sitting and eating their lunch
- Using the toilet and washing their hands independently
- Putting their hand up to answer questions on the carpet

Important Messages for Parents & Carers
Our day begins at 8:45am and finishes at 3:15pm.
Please send your child to school every day with: a water bottle, their book bag and a coat and/or sun hat (depending on the weather).
Reading Books will be changed on Mondays and Thursdays. Please read with your child daily even if just for a few minutes and write a quick comment in their reading record. Reading books will only be changed once we feel that your child is ready to move on to the next book.
Please ensure that all clothing is labelled, including their shoes, as we will swap them throughout the day to put on our wellies.
Our PE lessons will take place every Wednesday in Autumn Term. The children should come to school already wearing their PE kit. Our PE kit consists of: a plain white t-shirt, black leggings or track suit bottoms (black shorts in the summer months), trainers and their red Abingdon jumper/cardigan. Please do not send your child to school in jewellery especially on PE days. Earrings must be removed on PE days. If they can not be removed because they are new, they should be taped over.
If you have any questions or concerns please email or send a Dojo message to your child's class teacher. We are ALWAYS here to help!

Rewards
In Reception, we always give lots of stickers out for great work and super behaviour which the children can then put on their own individual sticker charts. When the children reach 10 stickers, they can choose a prize out of the prize box. We also use Class Dojo points to share some of the children's achievements directly with parents. Every day we pick a 'Star of the Day' who can sit on our special 'Star of the Day' chairs throughout the following day. When the adults pick at the end of the day, we explain to the children why they have been chosen and celebrate their hard work, together.
Once a week, we also pick a class superstar who will recieve a certificate in Celebration Assembly on Fridays (in Autumn 1 we give these certificates out in class). This could be someone who has tried really hard at their learning, or has been a kind friend to others or has been setting a good example to the rest of the class with their fantastic behaviour choices. We also select one child every week who has shown one of our core values (Respect, Responsibility and Resilience) and they are then able to go and have hot chocolate with the headteacher. Attendance is very important Abingdon so twice a term we do "Beat the Bell" as an incentive to be in school on time every day.

At Abingdon Primary School we use a communication and rewards app called 'Class Dojo'. This provides the children with an opportunity to earn points based on skills and values created in class and also links in with the schools core values of resilience, respect and responsibility. We use Class Dojos to engage parents by sharing photos and videos of exciting moments in the classroom. It is also an effective way for teachers and parents to communicate.
