Geography and History - Tomorrow's world
This term we will be learning about climate change across the UK and other countries. We will be looking at the challenges we face becaue of climate change how renewable energy souces can help to combat the negative affects of this. We will be looking at biomes (areas of the planet with a similar climate such as woodlands, desert, tundras) and we will even have a go at creating our own biome! We will also be will carrying out fieldwork in our local park (Reddish Vale) and we will write to our local MP to make suggestions on how to improve our local enviroment.
Our Class Read:
This term we are reading The Graveyard Book!
Nobody Owens, known to his friends as Bod, is a perfectly normal boy. Well, he would be perfectly normal if he didn't live in a graveyard, being raised and educated by ghosts, with a solitary guardian who belongs to neither the world of the living nor the world of the dead.
There are dangers and adventures for Bod in the graveyard: the strange and terrible menace of the Sleer; a gravestone entrance to a desert that leads to the city of ghouls; friendship with a witch, and so much more.
But it is in the land of the living that real danger lurks, for it is there that the man Jack lives and he has already killed Bod's family.
A deliciously dark masterwork by bestselling author Neil Gaiman, with illustrations by award-winning Dave McKean
Science - Living things and their habitats
In science this term, we will be describing the differences in the life cycles of a mammal, an amphibian, an insect and a bird and we will be describing the life process of reproduction in some plants and animals. We will have our very own caterpillars and we will be watching them grow through their diferent life cycle stages.
Information for Parents
We have PE every Monday and Tuesday. Please can you ensure your child comes to school wearing the correct kit (white t-shirt, black shorts and pumps/trainers).
Please read our Spring Newsletter:
Homework
Our homework project for this term is saved in our class files.
Spellings and times tables practise activities will be sent home every Friday. Please encourage your child to practise these at home as both are cruical in your child's learning.
We do our spelling test every Friday. Please practise the spelling words which are sent home with your child. We have a spelling leaderboard in our class and the child to get to 100 points first wins a prize!
In Year 6, we recommend children read every night. This is extremely important as it allows children to develop their minds and imagination, have a stronger understanding of the world, become a better learner and listener and will ultimately allow them to become successful in Year 6 and in their future life.
You can now log your child's reading on GoRead! On this app, your child's reading journey will be kept all in one place, comments can be made from parents and teachers, and your child can earn and spend their virtual gems!
Class Dojo

At Abingdon Primary School we use a commucation app called Class Dojo. We use this to engage parents by sharing photos and videos of exciting moments in the classroom. It is also an effective way for teachers and parents to communicate.
Times Table Rock Stars

In Year 6 it is crucial that children know their times tables up to the 12x table.
At Abingdon, we use Times Tables Rock Stars. This is an exciting and engaging way for children to practise, and become fluent in, their times tables. Children are encouraged to play at home to improve their speed and scores.
They can also earn points and certificates through Times Table Rock Stars, so please encourage your child to play at home.
Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings
Below is a list of spellings all Year 6 children should read and write by the end of the year. These words are sent home as part of their spellings each week. Please help support your child's learning by practising these at home.
