Merlins Autumn Term
Behind Enemy Lines
We have a very exciting term ahead of us in Year 5/6, we are going to be learning all about World War Two.
Throughout the term, children will learn about major events during WW2, what life was like during the war, what impact the war had on society, gender roles in WW2 and much more.
In class, we are reading the book, Letters From the Lighthouse. Letters from the Lighthouse is a historical mystery set in WW2 times. When Olive's sister goes missing during an air raid, Olive is determined to find out what happened to her. She then finds a strange coded note which seems to link Sukie to Devon, and to something dark and impossibly dangerous. We are loving it so far and are excited to find out what happens!
Merlins Spring Term
Survival of the Fittest
This term’s learning will be based around the topic of ‘Survival of the Fittest' where we will be learning about earthquakes and making comparisons between California and Manchester.
Throughout the term, children will be describing and understanding key aspects of earthquakes, using maps, atlases, and globes to locate countries and describe features studied, looking at geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of a region of the UK and a region within North America and finding out about environmental regions, key physical or human characteristics, countries, and major cities in North America.
Science - Light
During this term we will learning about how to recognise that light appears to travel in straight lines, use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain that objects are seen because they give out or reflect light into the eye, explain that we see things because light travels from light sources to our eyes or from light sources to objects and then to our eyes and use the idea that light travels in straight lines to explain why shadows have the same shape as the objects that cast them.
Merlins Summer Term
Raiders or Traiders?
During the Summer term we will be learning all about the Romans! We will learn about the Roman Empire and their impact on Britain. We will discover what they invented, how they traded, where they invaded and what impact this made on British society.
Important Notes for parents

Contact/Class Dojo
At Abingdon Primary we use Class Dojo which is embedded within every year group. We use Class Dojo to engage parents by sharing photos and videos of exciting moments in the classroom. It is also an effective way for teachers and parents to communicate.
email: charlotte.walton@abingdon.stockport.sch.uk
At Abingdon Primary, each child has their own Times Table Rockstars account which they can use to help them learn the multiplication tables. It is essential that they use this every week in order to improve their skills and the speed of their recall. In Year 5/6 we check our TT Rockstar scores weekly and aim to move ourselves up on our 'TT Rockstars Class Hall of Fame'.
Year 5/6 Statutory Spellings
Below is a list of spellings all Year 6 children should read and write by the end of the year. These words are sent home as part of their spellings each week. Please help support your child's learning by practising these at home.
